A Busy Time in Southland...
Ken Broad - District Grand Master

How quickly the time has flown by since being invested as District Grand Master for the Southland District.

My time was taken up during late November and December visiting the Lodges in the district prior to the festive season to wish the Brethren and their families well for holiday period. There was only visit I was officially received which was to Lodge Waihopai no 189 in late November where I invested those officer’s not able to attend the communication which also coincided with the presentation of a 50 year service badge to Bro J Borland and was well attended as Bro Borland was well known in Southland for his services to rugby and was a member of the Southland team that won the Ranfurly Shield from Taranaki 1959.

After the Christmas break and with no meetings or activities in January February saw two installations at The Research Lodge of Southland and Lodge Kakapo No 471 and visiting  the Lodges in the district The major activity for district in February was the annual bowls tournament in Wyndham organised by the Mokoreta Lodge No 63 and was well attended this tournament has been going for at least  30 years and the charity being supported this year was the M. S Society.

March was again taken up with visiting and tending to the needs of the district.

April saw the Lodge of Remembrance installation which was a full installation.

Lodge Switzers No 223 held the annual clay bird shoot at the Balfour gun club for the broken barrels trophy which was retained by the holders Lodge Switzers No 223 by a small margin from Lodge Winton No 108 Remembrance No 318 was third and Lodge Fortitude No 64 fourth
The Month of May is shaping up to be a busy month starting with the installation at Lodge Hercules in Tapanui which is to be a combined effort by Wickliffe, Otago Lakes, and the Southland districts.

This is followed by a 50 year presentation to W Bro R W Trotter at The Mokoreta Lodge No 63 on the 11th, a 60 year bar to Bro W L S Thomson at THE Wallace Lodge No 129 on the 16th, a third degree at The Fortitude Lodge No 64 on the 17th,  the installation O Bro B A Dockerty of Lodge St John No 94 on the 18th and the installation of W Bro R J W Falconer of Lodge Waikaka No 151 on the 22nd so mall in all a very busy month coming up.
